Obediance: So, how important is it really?

The word obedience doesn’t seem to bring to mind any warm fuzzies BUT it is something that is really important and needs to be talked about. Everyday we have opportunities to obey or disobey and we normally don’t even give it a second thought. How many times have we gone over the speed limit? Do we think twice about it? Not most of the time. I’ve even heard it said that going 5 miles over the speed limit is acceptable. I’ve been guilty of it myself. Or how about getting in the grocery aisle with more than 10 items saying to yourself that 11 or 12 is ok too? What about seeing a sign that says No -______ and we think well its just a little..it won’t really matter. What about the little white lie? Does that count? What we are doing is doubting the authority that’s making the rules. We attempt to determine what their REAL motives were so that we can absolve ourselves from having to follow it.

How much faith do we put in other peoples words? Our own word? Gods Word? Do we question Gods Word and wonder Yeah, but did He really mean it?

Matthew 7:24-27 NLT

24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Jesus says here that someone who listens to His word and His teaching and does it is wise because when the storms of life hit the house will stand because it is built on Him. He says that those who hear and don’t obey are foolish and they will not be standing when the storms of life come. Gods word is our manual of life. When we read His word we need to put into practice what we’re reading so that we can be prepared to deal with life.

Luke 6:46-49 NLT

46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

I love this account in Luke. Here Jesus is saying that people are calling him Lord, Lord with their mouth but they aren’t doing what He says. How many times do we ask someone for help and then not do what they say? How many times have we done that to God? How many times have we read the solution in the Word and then thought Does it really mean that…surely a little is ok, right?

This same principle is in James 1:22-26

22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

When we come to church and hear the Word or when we are listening to a preacher preach the word we need to take the word and do it not just hear it. And the Bible also says that we will be blessed for doing it. Praise God. When you go to college to get a degree you read and study a lot of textbooks but you don’t have the opportunity to put it into practice until your on the job. Then you must apply what you’ve been taught and occasionally you’ll need to refer back to those books. The same is true with Gods Word. We use it as our manual for life. We study it and then we take what we’ve learned and we apply it to our life and if we have any doubt we go back to the Word and look it up.

Obediance. So, How Important is it Really? It’s the difference between life and death, blessing and cursing, your house standing or your house falling.
Its important to God.

John 14:21

21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

John 14:23-24

23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.

Jesus clearly says that those who love Him will obey Him. ALL who love me will do what I say. He is connecting love and obedience. In verse 24 He states that the words are not His own but come from the Father. So the Father also says that If we love Him then we will obey Him.

John 21:15-17 NLT
15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?[a]”  “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”    “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.  16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”    “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”    “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.  17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”    Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”    Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

Jesus speaking to Peter kept asking him if Peter loved Him and Peter kept saying Yes. And Jesus told him to feed His Sheep. He was saying Peter if you love me then obey me.

In marriage ceremonies now…there is a growing number of women that don’t want to say that they will honor and obey their husbands. They see that as some kind of scheme to control them. But God has made the husband to be the head of the wife. Its Gods design. The woman will want to obey her husband because she loves him and wants to please him and a Godly man won’t misuse his wife.

1 John 2;3-6 3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. 4 If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 5 But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. 6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

So, how important Is it? How does God view obedience. Does he think it has a sliding scale or is it black and white to Him. Those who obey God know Him and love Him and those who don’t prove that they don’t love Him. Our love is measured by our obedience. Why should I walk in love with everyone? Because Jesus commanded us to and because I love Him I want to do things that please Him. Love compels me to obey.

So, How Important is it Really? Obediance.

Salvation rests upon it. There is only ONE way to heaven. Not every road leads there. We can’t just come to God and expect to get to heaven. He’s got a road and we must be obedient to His way of doing things. God thinks its important.
